Geokosmos to Setup Office in India

GEOKOSMOS International, a leader in the topographical survey market of Europe, is all set to foray into India. It is planning to set up a liaison office in Delhi to primarily engage in general business development within the aerial photography and mapping industry. "India is a potential market and we too are looking forward to building relations with business partners and clients there," said Geokosmos vice-president, International Business Development, Peter Goellner. The company is awaiting RBI approval to set up its office here. "It's in the final stages. Once we get the approval from the Indian authorities, we will launch our liaison office and provide technology for aerial photography that in turn will speed up infrastructure projects," Mr Goellner said. Generally companies set up liaison offices to get the feel of the market to understand business prospects and condition before incorporating companies in India in the form of wholly-owned subsidiaries or JV companies with local partners. "In India, aerial photography is restricted as it mostly carried out by government entities. With the boom in infrastructure, the regulations will be eased and private players will be given a fair chance," Mr Goellner said. Aerial photography will help boost transportation and infrastructural projects in India. Earlier Geokosmos participated in Map India 2008, which was held in Greater Noida between February 6 and 8. Geokosmos' operations cover all aspects of project management, LiDar surveying, aerial photography, GIS photogrammetry, cartography, imagemapping, and research and development of mapping technology.

Earth Caching Project Will Bring GPS Technology to Fifth and Sixth Graders

CASPER, Wyo.-- The Qwest Foundation and the Wyoming Department of Education today announced that two Park Elementary school teachers have won $5,000 in the Qwest Teachers and Technology grant program. Lynn Ahrndt and Kelly Toups plan to teach their fifth- and sixth-grade students about “earth caching,” which studies and compiles information about area geologies under the “nothing left behind” principle. Students will learn Global Positioning System (GPS) technology; take field trips to enhance their understanding of local geology; and share their work with students at their school, across the country and even around the world. "Technology is so ingrained in everything we do that it’s paramount for students to apply it to their studies,” said Michael Ceballos, Qwest president of Wyoming. "The earth caching program elevates technology use at Park Elementary, and also incorporates science, math, reading and writing, so students integrate several subjects as they learn." According to Ahrndt and Toup’s grant application, the earth caching project and the Qwest Foundation grant will help Park Elementary achieve one of its goals — to connect communities and people around the globe. “We created our project based on the opportunity for immediate and continued usefulness in the classroom, and believe earth caching will not only enhance students’ learning now, but help them build solid skills for the future,” Ahrndt said. The objectives of the Qwest Teachers and Technology grant program are to improve student achievement through the use of today’s technology; build a real-world team problem-solving environment; and set the groundwork for future technology integration projects. Through a competitive process administered by the Wyoming Department of Education, the Qwest Foundation provided a total of $25,000 to be awarded to three educators whose innovative ideas to incorporate technology into their classrooms would help improve education. .”

EU Transport Ministers Approves Galileo Implementation Plan

European Union transport ministers have voted to support a proposal for the implementation of Galileo, seen as a key step following the bloc's guaranteeing funds for the project in its budget last year The transport ministry oversees the Galileo project within the European Union; it approved the text of the Galileo Implementation Regulation on Monday, April 7. The regulation represents the legal basis for the implementation of the budget and sets out a new management structure for the project. The Republic of Slovenia, which currently holds the rotating EU presidency, hailed the approval as a decisive step forward in the realization of the Galileo project. "Today, we sent a clear signal to Europe and the whole world that we are still firmly committed to provide all European citizens and enterprises with a high-quality satellite-navigation service by 2013. We will create new jobs and Europe will claim its rightful place side by side with the technologically most developed world powers," said Radovan Žerjav, Slovenian transport minister and president of the Transport Council of the EU. The budget for the implementation of the entire European satellite navigation program amounts to €3.4 billion between now and 2013. The project consists of the EGNOS program and the Galileo program. The European Commission is responsible for the establishment and operation of the programs, while it will be assisted by the GSA Agency and the European Space Agency in its implementation. The political control of the project, which will be 100 percent owned by the EU, will be performed directly by the Council of the EU and the European Parliament, with the assistance of an informal body named the Galileo Interinstitutional Panel.
