International Workshop on Climate Change and Natural Disasters

29 January 2009
Asian Institute of Technology (AIT)

Background:

We have been witnessing an increase in the frequency and intensity of disasters in recent few years such as Earthquakes in Indonesia, China, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India; Cyclones in Mayanmar, USA, Japan, Taiwan; Floods in Bangladesh, India, China, Vietnam, Thailand; Mudslides/ Landslides in many countries. We come across several papers on thermal anomalies and earthquake occurrence, melting of glaciers due to global warming, food insecurity due to unstable rainy season, sea level rise due to melting of glaciers, depletion of surface water resources, low rainfall in certain areas and many other related phenomenon. Natural disasters are directly or indirectly related to the thermal variation on land or ocean. The climate change and global warming may be important issue to look at where we study the Natural Disasters

Global warming is causing serious climate change, which is adversely affecting many factors vital to the existence of life on the planet Earth. Many species have got extinct in the last decade and many are under threats due to unfavorable climate conditions.

We believe this is the time that we get-together and work towards understanding the global and local threats of climate change and their mitigation as well as adaptation strategies by evolving interdisciplinary and international joint research initiatives. The active participation and mobilization of potential people and organizations are necessary for building an exciting and vibrant working group for research and capacity building.

Aim and Objectives:

The aim of this workshop is to develop joint research and capacity building initiatives with key partners to study the issues related to global warming, climate change and its’ relationship with natural disasters.

Workshop Themes:

  • Factors causing Global Warming and Climate Change
  • Threats and impacts – mitigation and adaptation
  • The needs for research and capacity building to slowdown and reduce the Global Warming
