NDM 2007 - Esfahan, Iran

First symposium on Geoinformation Technology for NDM was organised in May 2007 in Esfahan, Iran. It was warmly attended by 600 delegates from 20 countries. It offered a wholistic picture of preparedness for natural disasters and ensuring proper living. Delegates felt a strong need for continuing this meeting once in every two years to achieve the target of operationalising Geoinformation Technologies for NDM and Rehabilitation.

Participants

- Policy makers
- Ministers and Bureaucrats Decision makers
- Geoinformatics Professionals and scientists

Challenge - freedom from fear of disaster

Natural disasters have become a natural phenomenon. Earthquake, landslides, cyclones and floods visit the earth regularly and leave a trail of destruction and misery for thousands of people. The world is devastated by natural disaster since ages.  Human beings can not stop the advent of natural disasters. But, can work together to understand them better for better disaster resistant planning and development.

There is a need to understand the spatial relationship and impact  of these disaster on human settlements. This will facilitate the decision makers to develop a strategy for a preparedness plan to reduce the risk of these disasters and ensure safer living to the people  without the fear. We can use GIS to live in harmony with nature.

Objectives

The symposium will focus on the use of geoinformatics for natural disaster preparedness such as earthquake, flood, typhoon and tsunami etc.,and for rehabilitation and risk management by exploring the various causative factors. There will also be deliberations on how to use GIS for better planning of risk areas.

Recent Severe Natural Disasters

More than a million people are affected by severe floods in India. Several hundred thousands are missing and homeless. India's Disaster Management Division said more than 2.6 million people in 16 districts have been affected by the flooding. This region did not suffer this kind of flood in last 100 years.

Almost 101,200 hectares (250,000 acres) of farmland was under water, destroying precious wheat and rice stocks. Hundreds of thousands of people were fleeing the flood devastated areas of Bihar in India after losing their homes and loved ones. Now the people are facing another disaster of epidemic and looking for the relief.

Tropical Cyclone "Nargis" ripped through the delta area of Myanmar (Burma) on 2&3 May 2008 with wind speeds reaching 190 kilometers per hour (120 mph).

Satellite images before and after the Cyclone, and detected flood water (5th May 2008)

Almost 100,000 people were killed and millions of people have been left homeless by the devastating Cyclone "Nargis".

The powerful earthquake on China's Sichuan province on 12 May 2008 destroyed more than 70,000 homes in the region where at least 60,000 people were killed.

The earthquake has left more than 5,000 children without their parents and more than 4,000 elderly without caregivers.
